George’s Shoes & Repair continuing a family legacy

Ron George, middle, with his kids, Melissa and Luke, who plan on taking over the 100-year-old family business when he retires.

Some family businesses are short lived, while others, like George’s Shoes and Repair, continue for generations.

The George family business of shoe cobbling has been going strong since 1905, and their Arden Hills store has been in this location for 12 years. Before that, they were in several major malls around the Twin Cities. The business will still be in family hands when Ron George retires. Two of his children, Melissa and Luke, are ready to run the shop when that day comes.

George’s Shoe Store & Repair not only does repair but they sell comfort and quality footwear, socks and accessories. They can also revitalize and customize footwear, handbags and whatever else can be saved with a little leather, a few stitches or a new sole.

Ron says now more than ever there’s no need to discard a comfortable pair of shoes just because they have a tear or the leather has separated from the sole.

“With the advancements in technology and adhesives, there are so many things that can be repaired now that couldn’t have been before,” Ron says.

The shop not only fixes shoes, but can work on leather and non-leather items such as belts, jackets, ball gloves, purses, luggage, backpacks and so much more.

George’s is now offering more variety of beautifully crafted wooden boxes, which are used as shoeshine boxes or memory boxes. Luke says one person even bought one for a jewelry box.

If you can’t make it to George’s during store hours, there is a convenient 24-hour drop box located at the front door, as well as several drop-off locations around the Twin Cities. For a full list, visit http://www.georgesshoes.com/locations/.

You will find a variety of different shoe and sock brands at George’s as well, such as BIRKENSTOCK, UGG, Minnetonka Moccasins, Merrell, Smartwool Socks and Darn Tough Socks. For a full list of brands, visit georgesshoes.com.

The Georges take great pride in their work, Luke says.

“We’re probably harder on each other about the quality of our work than our competition,” Ron adds. “We all hound each other about doing a better job.”

When dropping off items for repair, you can always expect honest and informative answers.

Melissa says customers who shop at George’s, for repair or new shoes, know they are going to be satisfied.

Whether you’re looking for something new or hoping to save something old, stop by George’s Shoes and Repair. Chances are you’ll find more knowledge, variety and experience than you expected — just as loyal customers have for decades.
