U.S. Senator Al Franken recently congratulated Tyler Weaver, a Minnesota State-Mankato student from Maplewood, on his appointment to West Point. He will be part of the Class of 2017 when he enters this summer.

Tyler, the son of Tonya and Michael Weaver of Maplewood, was nominated for the appointment by Senator Franken in early 2013. He graduated from Tartan High School in Oakdale in 2012.

“I am very pleased that someone with Tyler’s talent and drive will be attending West Point this summer,” Franken said. “Each year, I nominate many impressive young people to our nation’s military academies, and Tyler was one of the few chosen for an appointment because of his hard work, character and achievements. I am very pleased he will be one of our nation’s future leaders.”

At Minnesota State-Mankato, Tyler studied mechanical engineering. He has also worked with Relay for Life, Feed My Starving Children and Habitat for Humanity.

Individuals interested in attending a military academy must be nominated by a government authority such as the President, Vice President or Member of Congress.
