Three persons of interest sought in Shoreview homicide

Investigators are looking for these two men, who the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department has said are persons of interest in the shooting death of Hagos Tsegay Melake. The photographs were captured from a surveillance camera outside the entrance to the Hunan Garden Restaurant in downtown St. Paul, where Melake was last seen alive.

This woman was caught on camera using one of Hagos Tsegay Melake's bank cards at a US Bank ATM on West Broadway in Minneapolis three hours after he was last seen. She is also a person of interest in the homicide investigation.

At a Wednesday press conference, several of Hagos Tsegay Melake's family members pleaded for anyone with information in his shooting death to come forward.

Authorities are looking for three persons of interest in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Hagos Tsegay Melake. Ramsey County Sheriff’s deputies found Melake, of South St. Paul, shot dead in a parking lot of a business on the 5700 block of Hamline Avenue North in Shoreview in the early morning hours of Aug. 29.

On Wednesday, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and more than a dozen of Melake’s family members and friends held a press conference at the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Patrol Station in Arden Hills with an update on the investigation.

Melake was last seen alive leaving the Hunan Garden Restaurant on Cedar Street in downtown St. Paul around 1:40 a.m. on Aug. 29 with two unidentified male suspects. Investigators are looking for the public’s help in identifying the two men. Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Randy Gustafson said surveillance footage from outside the restaurant’s entrance shows Melake getting into a car and leaving the restaurant with the pair.

It is still unclear how Melake arrived in Shoreview or why. According to a Sept. 5 press release from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, ATM surveillance footage from a US Bank office on West Broadway in Minneapolis, near the intersection of Dupont Avenue North, shows an unknown woman using one of Melake’s bankcards at 4:30 a.m. She is also a person of interest in the case.

At Wednesday's press conference, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office Commander of General Investigations Mike Salter said the woman successfully withdrew funds from Melake’s bank accounts.

Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom is asking anyone who can identify the woman and two men shown in the surveillance photographs and footage to contact the sheriff’s office at 651-266-7320. Authorities would also like anyone with information on Melake’s activities between the hours of 1:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 29 to contact them at the same number.

There is a reward available through the Minnesota Crime Stoppers program for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who killed Melake.
