Raiders ride “uneven” performance to state title

Oftentimes a fraction of a point will decide a championship at the state gymnastics meet. That wasn’t the case last Friday when Roseville won its third consecutive Class AA crown.

Roseville beat runner-up Northfield by a full point thanks in large part to a dominating performance on the uneven bars. Roseville outscored Northfield by nearly two full points on the apparatus to pull away and win the title.

Isis Muller, Carly Wagner, Olivia Rosenow and Kaylee Strecker each scored 9.4 or better on the bars to beat Northfield by 1.825 points in the event. Muller tied Northfield’s Bailey DuPay for the top score on the bars with a 9.75, Wagner added a 9.7, Rosenow scored a 9.5 and Strecker had a 9.4

Roseville also outscored Northfield on the balance beam but by only 0.05 points. Jessica Strecker led Roseville on the beam with a 9.55. Muller added a 9.525 and Wagner scored a 9.475. Kayla Soplata’s 9.175 also figured into the team score on the beam.

Northfield outpointed Roseville on the vault by 0.175 and the floor exercise by a seventh of a point. Wagner had Roseville’s high score on the vault with a 9.55 and Muller led the Raiders on the floor exercise also with a 9.55.

DuPay led all competitors with a 9.775 on the vault, a 9.725 on the beam and a 9.825, the highest score of the night for any gymnast in any event, on the floor exercise.

Once again, the chase for the team championship turned into a two-team race despite some signs from the previous week’s section meets that a couple of other squads might be a factor. St. Cloud Tech, which was third in the final state rankings, had posted the second-highest section score but ended up fifth at state. Wayzata actually scored higher at state than it did at sections but could not keep up, finishing third and more than two points behind Northfield.

Roseville’s one-point advantage in the final team scores was the highest for a Class AA state meet since Northfield won the 2010 title by 2.1 points over Roseville. The cumulative difference between the first and second-place teams in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Class AA state meets was 0.85.

In addition to winning its third consecutive state title, Roseville upped its total number of state championships to seven. The Raiders won four straight starting in 2006 before yielding to Northfield for two years (2010, 2011).

Northfield has finished second to Roseville at the past three state meets.

Individual state meet

The Raiders were also busy on Saturday at the Class AA individual meet but came up short in the championship department. DuPay played a part in that outcome.

DuPay prevented a pair of Raiders from claiming event championships. She beat out Wagner on the uneven bars and Jessica Strecker on the balance beam en route to claiming the all-around title.

Wagner entered the state meet as the defending uneven bars champion and matched DuPay’s score of 9.85. DuPay was declared the state champion by virtue of the tie-breaker. Roseville’s Muller finished fourth and Kaylee Strecker took seventh.

DuPay edged Jessica Strecker on the balance beam with a score of 9.725 to Strecker’s 9.7. Muller again took fourth and Wagner ended up 20th.

The floor exercise title also went to DuPay with a score of 9.775. Muller had Roseville’s highest finish as she landed in 12th place and Kaylee Strecker wound up 23rd.

The vault was the only event DuPay didn’t win as she took second to Brainerd’s Beth Etterman. Wagner finished 12th for Roseville, which also got a 16th-place finish from Jessica Strecker.

In the all-around, DuPay scored a 39.075. Muller took third with a score of 38.375 and Jessica Strecker also placed with a fifth-place performance (38.150). Wagner was 23rd.
