A new face in the newsroom

I joined the Lillie News team at the beginning of December and probably already know the cities of Maplewood and North St. Paul better than I knew my hometown.

I grew up in Shakopee, studied English at Gustavus Adolphus College, served for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kyrgyzstan, and earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison before moving to Roseville with my husband, Derek.

Right before our wedding in October, we purchased the house that his great uncle built in the 1950s. When we're not working, we enjoy exploring the area on foot and by bike with our young Siberian husky, Hank, by our side.

This winter we've been attempting to teach Hank skijoring commands, but he's too scared of the skis right now to actually pull anyone. Coaching tips are always welcomed — for both dog and owners!

In terms of reporting, my freelance interests lie in cross-cultural, social justice issues.

In 2013, I applied for New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof's annual "Win a Trip" contest for bloggers and landed a trip to West Africa to report on issues of health and poverty in Mali, Niger and Chad.

The fact that I submitted both an essay and a video to convey my passion for equity and storytelling gave me the competitive edge over 700 other applicants. But nothing could have prepared me for the intensity of reporting on malnutrition, obstetric fistula, malaria and the plights of Darfuri refugees — all in the span of 10 days.

Starting a new chapter with Lillie News, I'll be covering local government, community events and human interest features for the Ramsey County Review, Maplewood Review and South-West Review. With each interview, I feel more and more connected to the communities I report on, which to me is one of the great benefits of being a reporter.
