Mounds View reaches final in section tennis

There might be a bit of déjà vu for the Mounds View High School boys tennis team when it takes the court on Tuesday. The similarities between this year's Section 5AA final and the one in 2014 are many, and the Mustangs hope to add one more.

A year ago, Mounds View took on Maple Grove in the section championship match at Park Center High School and snapped a two-year section-final losing streak to the Crimson.

This week, the Mustangs have a chance at a two-year winning streak of its own when they take the courts at Park Center.

Mounds View, ranked No. 1 for a good portion of the season, reached the section final by beating Coon Rapids and Blaine in its first two matches last week. The Mustangs won both matches by a 7-0 score and need four points on Tuesday to advance to the state tournament in the first week of June.

Tuesday's match begins at 3 p.m.

The Knights came within a point of getting another crack at Mounds View. Seeded fifth, Irondale won its opening match and dropped a close decision in round two.

Irondale faced 12th-seeded Osseo in the first round on May 13 and beat the Orioles for the second time this season, this time by a 7-0 score. The victory sent the Knights to the quarterfinals, where they faced fourth-seeded Blaine. The Bengals edged Irondale 4-3 during the regular season and did the same again in the playoffs.

Blaine went on to lose to Mounds View 7-0 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Coming up

Next up for Irondale and Mounds View are the section singles and doubles tournaments, which begin Friday with the first three rounds and wrap up on May 27 with the semifinals and finals. All matches take place at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.

St. Anthony Village

The Huskies participated in the Section 4A team tournament last week, but lost in the first round. Fifth-seeded St. Anthony fell 6-1 to fourth-seeded Minnehaha Academy.

Minnehaha Academy went on to lose to top-seeded Blake in the semifinals. Blake hosted third-seeded St. Paul Academy in the section final on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

Next up for St. Anthony is the Section 4A singles and doubles tournaments, which begin on Thursday. Representing the Huskies in the singles draw are senior Max Glass and sophomore Nick Kroening. Playing doubles for St. Anthony are the pairing of junior Mitchell Rognrud and senior Tenzin Legden and the duo of juniors Quinn Bellestri and Zach Johnson.

The Class A state tournament is June 2-5 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
