SLP/SAV wrestling gunning for conference glory

In its first year as a member of the Northwest Suburban Conference, the Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village wrestling team made a run at the league title but came up just short. With a slew of returning letterwinners, including three 20-match winners, the Panthers appear ready to make another run at the NWSC crown.

The Panthers lost just one conference dual a year ago.

"We want to compete this year for a conference title," said Jacob Roberts, who is in his fourth season as head coach of the Panthers. "Last year, our only conference loss to Maple Grove. We will likely be competing with them again this year to determine who our conference champion is."

The Panthers return a dozen letterwinners, three of whom won at least 20 matches last season and one of whom qualified for state.

Getting to the state tournament will require a bit of a different route for the Panthers this year. They have been moved out of Section 5AAA and into Section 4AAA. Also making the move are Centennial, Irondale and Mounds View. They all join up with 4AAA holdovers North St. Paul, Roseville, Stillwater and White Bear Lake.

The Panthers have participated in a pair of invitational tournaments so far and head to another on Dec. 12 at Andover.

Former St. Anthony wrestler at Concordia

Former Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village wrestler Tristan Wehmas was a two-time state entrant. He also played football for St. Anthony and took his gridiron talents to the college level this fall.

Wehmas, a 2015 St. Anthony Village High School graduate, is a freshman at Concordia University in St. Paul. He is a defensive lineman with the Golden Bears.

At St. Anthony, Wehmas was a two-time letterwinner in both football and wrestling. He was a two-year captain on the wrestling team and served as a football captain as a senior.
He is planning on majoring in criminal justice with a psychology minor.
