Irondale/St. Anthony boys hockey makes long trip worth it

The Irondale/St. Anthony Village boys hockey team wanted a change of scenery for the holiday break so it ventured north last week. The Knights had played in the Schwan Cup at the Super Rink, which is also where their home rink is located, and decided to mix it up this season.

Irondale traded Blaine for Roseau and played in the Roseau Holiday Hockey Classic. By the time they were done, the Knights picked up a pair of victories and finished second in the tournament.

Round one of the tournament presented Irondale with an interesting challenge. The Knights faced Minot, which won the state title in North Dakota last season. Irondale withstood an offensive onslaught to earn a 3-1 victory.

David Mulligan turned away 40 of the 41 shots he faced to earn the victory between the pipes for Irondale. Offensively, the Knights got goals from Jack Moore, Tanner Eskro and Jake Fuhr and assists from Ben Crandall and Victor Mattsson, who had a pair.

Game two came against Henry Sibley and Irondale built a five-goal lead en route to a 5-2 victory. Moore led the offense with a hat trick while Louie Meysembourg added a pair of assists. Also tallying goals for the Knights were Nick Ellingson and Mattsson while Tanner LaMotte and Justin Ohnstad added single assists.

Mulligan added another W to his total by making 30 saves.

That victory sent Irondale to the title game against the host Rams. Roseau prevented the Knights from taking a lead like they did in the first two rounds. Roseau won 6-0 while pumping 49 shots on Mulligan.

Irondale also played a non-conference game on Jan. 2 when it visited Tartan. The Knights led 1-0 after the first period but couldn’t make that lead stand and fell 2-1 to the Titans.

The Knights return to Northwest Suburban Conference play in their two games on the schedule this week. Irondale visits Coon Rapids on Thursday and Osseo on Saturday.
