North St. Paul award will recognize residents, businesses

North St. Paul is beginning a new program to honor its residents. According to city staff, 2016 will mark the first year of the Community Service Award, which will be become an annual event.

The idea for the program has been in the works for a while, said Debra Gustafson, explaining that North St. Paul city officials wanted to find a way to recognize the good work of its residents.

Residents and business owners have been working in a sub-group alongside the North St. Paul City Council to flesh out the categories and their criteria since October 2015.

Three categories have been proposed for the program: the Legacy Award, Community Service Award and Good Neighbor Award. The Community Service Award can be submitted as youth individual, youth group, adult individual or adult group.

Awards will go to people or businesses that positively impact the city of North St. Paul. The winners do not have to be residents of North St. Paul as long as the work they do has an effect on the city.

Nominations are being accepted now through noon April 12. Applications will be available both online and at City Hall. The awards ceremony honoring the winners will be held on May 17.

Visit the city's website for detailed award criteria or to download an application.
