Huskies can’t hold down Totino-Grace

Although it finished the regular season with eight more victories than Totino-Grace, the St. Anthony Village High School boys basketball team found itself opening the post-season at the Eagles’ gym. The Huskies drew the fifth seed in Section 4AAA while Totino-Grace was seeded fourth and got to play at home in the quarterfinals on Feb. 24.

The Huskies tried to prove the seeds wrong and led by double digits into the second half. Totino-Grace wasn’t about to go quietly, however, and rallied for a 66-61 victory.

Totino-Grace followed up the win over St. Anthony by knocking off Hill-Murray in the semifinals on Feb. 27. Hill-Murray, the eighth seed, upset top-seeded Mahtomedi in the first round.

Totino-Grace and another surprise team, sixth-seeded Fridley, meet for the section championship on March 3 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Washington High School. Fridley beat third-seeded Columbia Heights and second-seeded St. Paul Johnson to reach the final.

St. Anthony finished its season with a record of 19-8. The win total was eight more than the Huskies won in 2015 and 2014 combined.
