16-year-old stabbed after North-Tartan basketball game

A 16-year-old boy received multiple stab wounds when a fight broke out after a North versus Tartan high school boys basketball playoff game at East Ridge High School March 3.

The boy was transported to Regions Hospital and at press time was listed in critical condition. Woodbury police did not identify the victim.

Two juvenile males were taken into police custody, but were released the next day, March 4.

Woodbury police said they do not believe the two boys who were detained were directly involved in the assault, and they were not students at Tartan or North.

Based on police interviews, Woodbury investigators also do not believe there is a connection to East Ridge High School or Woodbury regarding the assault.

The basketball section championship game between the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District rivals drew a large crowd from all over the metro area. North High won the Section 4 championship game, 70-65, to advance to the state Class 4A boys basketball tournament.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance videos for additional witnesses and suspects, said spokesperson Michelle Okada.

Anyone with any information regarding the fight or stabbing is asked to contact the Woodbury Police Department.
