St. Anthony girls ousted in first round

The St. Anthony Village High School girls basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a bit of momentum by winning seven of its final nine games. That surge looked like it might have a chance to continue as the Huskies battled gamely in the first half of their first-round playoff game against Totino-Grace.

The second half was a different story, however, as the Eagles pulled away and won 48-28.

The first half was a defensive showdown as the two teams combined for only 27 points. Totino-Grace led 14-13 as the teams went to the locker room at halftime.

The Eagles continued to hold the Huskies’ offense at bay in the second half while opening up its own offense. Totino-Grace outscored St. Anthony 34-15 after the break.

Jenna Meyer and Madison Brunn paced the Eagles with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Samantha Skwarek scored a team-high nine points for St. Anthony, which also got seven points from Kalli Wiebusch and six from Nicole Zielsdorf.

Totino-Grace followed up its victory by facing third-seeded DeLaSalle in the semifinals on March 5. The Islanders beat sixth-seeded Fridley in the quarterfinals and advanced to the section final by dumping Totino-Grace 62-57.

DeLaSalle and top-seeded St. Paul Como Park meet for the section championship on March 10 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Washington High School. Como Park received a bye in the first round and beat fifth-seeded Hill-Murray 82-76 in the quarterfinals.

St. Anthony Village finishes its season with a record of 10-16.
