St. Anthony grad chasing another national title

For the second consecutive season, Samantha Cady is going after a national championship.

Cady, a 2012 St. Anthony Village High School graduate, is a senior on the Thomas More College women’s basketball team and the Saints have advanced to the finals of the NCAA Division III tournament again. Thomas More, the defending DIII champion, faces Tufts University on April 4.

The Saints enter the final with a record of 32-0 and are ranked No. 1 in the nation. They qualified for the championship game by beating fourth-ranked Amherst College 74-65 in the national semifinals on March 19 in Columbus, Ohio.

The Division III championship game is being played as a part of a larger celebration of the 35th anniversary of the NCAA women’s basketball championships. All three NCAA women’s basketball title games are being played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in a two-day span.

The Division II and III title games are slated for April 4 and the Division I final will be played on April 5. It is the first time that all three NCAA title games will be played in the same city and venue.

Cady, a captain this season, is averaging 5.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. She is shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 68.5 from the free-throw line. She has scored in double figures three times this season, including a career-high 17 on Jan. 2 in a 102-38 blowout of Thiel.

After graduating from St. Anthony, Cady spent two years at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, before transferring to Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

As a junior, the 5-foot 9-inch forward helped Thomas More go 33-0 and win the Division III national title. The Saints enter this year’s championship game riding a 65-game winning streak.

Thomas More, a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, won the regular-season title again this season and has won the past 10 PAC Championship Tournaments.
