St. Anthony Huskies second in conference weightlifting

The Tri-Metro Conference held its weightlifting championships earlier this month and St. Anthony Village High School was well-represented. The Huskies finished second in the team standings and had a half-dozen individuals finish in the top three of their weight classes.

Individuals earned points by adding up the weight each could lift in the clean, bench and squat lifts. St. Anthony finished runner-up to Concordia Academy. Holy Angels took third, Brooklyn Center finished fourth and Fridley came in fifth place.

Winning individual weight classes for St. Anthony were senior Brandon Martinez and juniors Jake Smith and Joe Hitti. Martinez won the 145-pound weight class by lifting 725 pounds between the three lifts.

Smith captured first place at 165 pounds by lifting 850 total pounds. Hitti took first at 205 pounds by lifting 975 pounds.

Finishing second in their respective weight classes were senior Cooper Passafaro, junior Matt Carraher and sophomore Luke Pauly. Passafaro was the runner-up at 225 pounds with a total amount lifted of 785 pounds.

Carraher, competing in the heavyweight division, lifted 735 pounds to finish second. Pauly finished second to Martinez in the 145-pound class with 715 pounds.
