Used Book Sale

A used book sale will be held at 990 Summit Ave. on April 14 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 17, from noon to 4. The St. Paul Branch of AAUW is sponsoring the sale and supports scholarship/education funds. Thousands of books on all topics are for sale. Fiction and non-fiction includes award-winners, best sellers and vintage books. Also there are thrillers, mysteries, children and young adult books. There is something for everyone.


Lilies, Jewelsof the Garden

At this presentation planned for Thursday, April 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Master Gardener Barbara Ronningen will cover different types of lilies and how to grow them, potential problems with lilies and using lilies in the landscape. Register on the library’s website, by calling Oakdale Library at 651-730-0504, or by stopping by the Oakdale library, 1010 Heron Avenue N.


Movie Night at Lake Elmo Library

Lake Elmo Public Library continues showing “grown-up” movies on two Thursday nights in April. Free movie popcorn is available.

On April 14, at 6 p.m. the film is “Suffragette” with Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep and Cary Mulligan. The foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal state. Rated PG-13 for some intense violence, thematic elements, brief strong language and partial nudity.

And on Thursday, April 28, at 6 p.m. is “The Big Short” with Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. Four denizens in the world of high-finance predict the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s, and decide to take on the big banks for their greed and lack of foresight. The film won a 2016 Oscar for Best Writing/Adapted screenplay. Rated R for pervasive language and some sexuality/nudity.

The Alternate Universe: Creating Fictional Worlds

How do you create fictional but vivid and detailed “other worlds” in fiction? Learn how celebrated authors have mastered the art of creating these alternate worlds where anything is possible, and how you can too!
