Oakdale Wellness 50+ Pickleball event

Pickleball is a new, active sport for adults age 50 and older. The Oakdale Wellnes 50+ group and the Vital Aging Network will offer free demonstrations and pickleball lessons from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 21. The event will take place at the Oakdale Discovery Center, 4444 Hadley Ave., Oakdale.

Other activities will include senior fitness evaluations, and an “Oakdale Challenge!” where residents can signup and earn awards for 150 minutes of exercising each week for 12 weeks.


Junior master gardeners: seed starting 

Children ages 12 and under can learn techniques for growing flowers and vegetables at the Oakdale Discovery Center, 4444 Hadley Ave. N. On Saturday, May 28, from 9 to 11 a.m., the master gardeners of Washington County will demonstrate how to prepare seeds for planting, how deep to plant, how frequently to water and other helpful secrets and tips. Decorate a flower pot, select the seeds to plant and then bring your plant home to watch it grow. This event is free, but you must reserve your spot by calling 651-747-3860.


Youth summer recreation camps

Registration is now open for Oakdale Recreation’s youth summer camps and programs. Games, crafts and special events are all part of the summer fun your child will enjoy while at each weekly themed camp June through August. Enroll in person at the Discovery Center, 4444 Hadley Ave. N., or online at www.oakdalefun.com.


Mammograms & martinis 

Maplewood Mall, located at 3001 White Bear Ave., is hosting “Mammograms & Martinis” Saturday, May 21, from 2 to 7 p.m. Women will have the opportunity to learn about breast and women’s health, while sipping on complimentary martinis. In addition, attendees will enjoy manicures, bingo, light snacks and adult coloring. Plus, HealthPartners will be on site providing a limited number of complimentary mammograms to those who pre-register by calling 954-993-3700.

Tickets for the event cost $30 and include two drink vouchers and 10 bingo game cards. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. To reserve your space, visit https://martinisandmammograms.eventbrite.com.


Library board to meet May 18

The Ramsey County Library Board will meet on May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the community program room of the Ramsey County Library in Maplewood, 3025 Southlawn Drive. A library board subcommittee will meet for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to review the board’s by-laws and policies. Subcommittee recommendations will be forwarded to the full library board for action at a future meeting. All meetings are open to the public.
