North High School senior dies after returning from prom

Anna Jaskulka

Anna Jaskulka, 18, a senior at North High School, died May 21 at Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury. She was found unresponsive at home after attending prom that night at the Landmark Center in St. Paul.

“We know there was alcohol involved. We don’t know anything else for certain, yet,” said Maplewood police chief Paul Schnell.

Jaskulka’s parents reportedly drove her home from the Landmark Center. They last saw her 15 minutes before finding her unresponsive. She was in full cardiac arrest when Maplewood emergency responders arrived at her home in the 2300 block of Schadt Drive in Maplewood.

According to Schnell, the emergency call came in just after 11 p.m., and both Maplewood police and paramedics arrived shortly after. Paramedics tried to resuscitate Jaskulka in her home, but she was ultimately transported to the Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury where she was pronounced dead.

According to Schnell, police are investigating where the alcohol came from, who Jaskulka was with that night and if she used any other substances.

Jaskulka was only about two weeks away from graduating from North. Maplewood police informed the school of her death the morning of May 22.

“We are truly saddened by the loss of Anna Jaskulka,” North High School Principal Greg Nelson said in a statement. “Anna was a student with a bright personality and kind heart. She will be deeply missed.”

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this student during this difficult time,” wrote Christine Osorio, superintendent of School District 622 in a letter to North High School staff.

“North High will have extra counselors available in the days ahead to support students and staff during this difficult time,” Nelson said.

According to Osorio, special counseling services will also be available at Tartan High School because Jaskulka attended Tartan before transferring to North.
