Beacons volleyball cruises in section final

The Concordia Academy volleyball team entered the Section 5AA final last week as the underdog, at least as far as the seeds were concerned. The Beacons were seeded second behind DeLaSalle despite having beaten the Islanders during the regular season.

As it turned out, the seeds were wrong. Very, very wrong.

Concordia Academy started fast and blew DeLaSalle out of the gym at Holy Angels on Nov. 3. The Beacons gave up just 45 points in winning the match 25-9, 25-19, 25-17. With the victory, Concordia Academy is headed to the state tournament, its third in a row.

There was no doubt that the two finalists were the top teams in the section. DeLaSalle lost just one set through the first three rounds of the tournament and gave up an average of just 13 points per set. Concordia was even more dominant in sweeping its first three tournament matches and giving up an average of just 11 points per set.

In their regular-season match-up, DeLaSalle won the first two games before Concordia Academy roared back to win the last three and the match.

The schedule for the state tournament was not available for this edition of the Review. The state tournament runs Thursday, Nov. 10, through Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Xcel Energy Center and the Class AA matches take place at 5 and 7 p.m. on the first two days. The three matches on Saturday are all during the late morning and afternoon.

Concordia Academy was the first Class AA team to clinch a spot in the state tournament. The second was Holy Angels, which won Section 4AA with a four-set victory over Hill-Murray on Nov. 3. The other six sections all held their finals on Nov. 5, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.
