Full returning gymnastics lineup has North thinking big

The North High School gymnastics team recently opened the 2016-17 season with a roster full of experienced varsity gymnasts. The Polars also added some talent to the roster and is looking for a solid campaign.

Co-head coaches Trista Larson and Erin McCabe have a large contingent of team members with great attitudes.

“Attitude has most definitely been a strength this year,” McCabe said.

Among North’s returning gymnasts is junior Tori Gardner, who is back after competing in the state meet last season. Gardner qualified for state in the vault, which she won at the section meet.

As a team, North finished third at sections and fourth in the Metro East Conference last season.

Joining Gardner as returning varsity gymnasts are seniors Mariah Larson, Madi Brenhofer, Bella Lavorato and Georgi Varland and sophomore Megan Weber.

Newcomers include junior Amanda Lanz and Camryn Syring. Lanz was a club gymnast who came out for the high school team this season, and Syring is back after missing last season because of an injury.

North’s goals this season include posting a team score of 135. Personal bests from individual gymnasts are also goals each time out.

“The team has potential,” McCabe said. “We will not truly know until we see the other teams [in the conference], but we should be similar in scores as we have only added to our team and did not lose any varsity girls.”

North opened the season at an invitational meet at Simley High School on Dec. 3. The Polars compiled a team score of 125.95. North hosted South St. Paul in a Metro East Conference dual on Dec. 8 and posted a score of 123 to the Packers’ 95.

North’s only event this week, its last prior to Christmas break, is a Metro East Conference dual Dec. 14 at Mahtomedi.
