Roseville’s Porter among Miss Basketball nominees

Kaia Porter

Kaia Porter continues to put up solid numbers for the Roseville Area High School girls basketball team as she is averaging more than 18 points per game. Last week, she made the first cut for the 2017 Miss Minnesota Basketball award.

Porter is one of 29 Minnesota high school seniors in the running for the award.

Through 13 games, Porter leads the Raiders and the Suburban East Conference in scoring at 18.5 points per game. She has scored in double digits in all but two games so far this season.

Playing at the wing, Porter has reached 20 or more points in six games and her season high is 28, which she got in a one-point win over Mounds View. Roseville is 6-0 when Porter scores at least 20 points.

Porter is one of only three players from the Suburban East Conference to make the first cut for Miss Basketball. The other two are from East Ridge.

Roseville downed Forest Lake 59-41 on Jan. 12 to remain within a game of the top spot in the Suburban East Conference. The top three teams in the SEC have one loss and Roseville is one of two squads with two conference losses.

The win over Forest Lake ran Roseville’s winning streak to five games. The Raiders’ last loss came in the first round of the holiday tournament to Woodbury and unfortunately for Roseville it counts in the conference standings.

Roseville is back in action this week with a pair of games. The Raiders host Park-Cottage Grove on Jan. 17 and visit White Bear Lake on Jan. 20.

White Bear Lake, the defending Suburban East Conference champion, is one of the one-loss SEC teams so that game will be a big in terms of the conference standings.
