St. Anthony girls basketball takes down DeLaSalle

Since rejoining the Tri-Metro Conference in 2006, the St. Anthony Village High School girls basketball team has had a tough time with one team in particular. DeLaSalle has been a thorn in the Huskies’ side all those years but that changed for one night last week.

St. Anthony hosted the Islanders on Jan. 10 and for the first time in program history beat them. The Huskies rallied from eight points down at halftime to win 74-71.

Entering the game, St. Anthony was 0-14 against DeLaSalle dating back to the 2006-07 season. Four of those losses came in playoff games in consecutive years starting in 2010.

St. Anthony used a balanced scoring attack to down the Islanders as four different Huskies scored in double figures. Kalli Wiebusch led all scorers with 18 points and Bonnie Zeller and Nicole Zielsdorf tied for second with 16 points. Samantha Sibbet chipped in with 12 points.

Of the previous 14 losses to DeLaSalle, St. Anthony kept the games within single digits only twice. In 2010-11, the Huskies lost 57-56 in the regular season and 62-58 in the playoffs.

St. Anthony followed up the win over DeLaSalle with a road game at Holy Angels on Jan. 13. Holy Angels in ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AAA and downed the Huskies 57-46.

Wiebusch again led all scorers with 17 points but no other St. Anthony player reached double digits. Zeller was second for the Huskies with nine points.

St. Anthony is back in action twice this week, starting with a Jan. 17 home game against Fridley. The Huskies then play at Visitation on Jan. 20.
