New pedestrian tunnel has snowy opening

A wintery Oct. 27 moved the ribbon cutting for the new pedestrian underpass at Highway 110 in Mendota Heights to an indoor space in the Village. Mayor Neil Garlock said the underpass that connects Mendota Plaza and the Villages at Mendota Heights will create a strong synergy between the two locations.

Council member Ultan Duggan led a committee that received more than 200 submissions in the "name the tunnel" contest, and he said the winning, unofficial name for the tunnel is "The Hole in 110."

The new $2.5 million, half-mile project is part of the 8.5-mile greenway that, when finished, will connect Mendota Heights to Lebanon Hills Regional Park.

Dakota County Commissioner Tom Egan said it is part of Dakota County's mission to provide an "extensive greenway system." He added the county has the goal and vision of having a 200-mile long greenway system serving the whole county.
