Updates planned for Interstate 94

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be renovating a major interchange in 2019 and 2020, affecting east metro commuters and area residents alike.

However, improvements to the interchange where interstates 94, 694 and 494 meet are expected to fix deficiencies in the bridges and pavement as well as improving mobility and safety.

According to the MnDOT website, the project will include constructing a new southbound auxiliary lane from Oakdale’s 10th Street to I-94, constructing a new southbound auxiliary lane from I-94 to Woodbury’s Tamarack Road, replacing and widening the northbound and southbound interchange bridges, adding northbound and southbound buffer lanes, reconstructing the ramps and repairing pavement.

In addition to addressing pavement and bridge condition issues, the ramp reconstruction will improve curvature, while the ramps, southbound auxiliary lane and buffer lane will provide more space for semitrailers to safely navigate the ramp. MnDOT resources explained that there have been several semitrailer rollovers on the ramps over the years.

The project, which is expected to cost about $30 million, will be paid for with state and federal funds, according to Denise Workcuff with Metro District Communications and Engagement. She added that bids for the project will open this fall.

According to MnDOT resources, the two existing bridges were built in 1966 and the bridge decks were replaced in 1984. The road was last resurfaced in 2010.

In 2019, traffic on the southbound portion of the bridge will be moved to the median area, while the new southbound bridge is built. Northbound traffic will stay on its existing bridge for this part of the construction.

Over the winter, the southbound traffic will go onto the new southbound bridge. Northbound traffic will stay in the existing northbound bridge until the construction season starts again and it is moved into the median area as a new northbound bridge is created.

Over the course of the project, there will be additional detours near Oakdale’s 10th Street and Woodbury’s Tamarack Road. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2020.
