Snake Discovery: The event is Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to noon. Slither into the world of reptiles by touching, holding, and even feeding some scaly critters at this fun program at Lake Elmo Library. Learn what makes reptiles unique and get an up-close look at some of nature’s most misunderstood creatures. You’ll even get to meet some of the reptiles you can find in your own backyard. No registration is required.

Author Talk: Frank Weber: From 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Ma 7, come hear Frank Weber share about his newest novel, “The I-94 Murders,” at Lake Elmo Library. Weber is a veteran of the forensic psychology profession. He has used his unique understanding of how predators think, knowledge of victim trauma, actual court cases and passion for writing true crime thrillers. Weber was raised in Pierz, Minnesota. This program is sponsored by The Friends of Lake Elmo Library. No registration is required.

Capturing Your Story: The event is Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to noon. Learn to share memorable experiences and stories of your life by writing them down for publication, for family and friends, or just yourself in this program at Lake Elmo Library. This class, with interactive exercises, will help you learn to capture your memories as a precious legacy. You will discover the key elements to include and the steps to take when telling your story in writing. Presenter and author Gloria VanDemmeltraadt has a passion to help people capture their memories, and she has worked with more than a hundred hospice patients and others to document their lives. No registration is required.

Ramsey County Master Gardeners Plant Sale

Be sure to make room on your calendar for the 2019 Plant Sale hosted by the Ramsey County Master Gardeners. It is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., indoors, rain or shine. This sale is open to the public and reliably features hundreds of great plants carefully tended by expert gardeners. There will be natives and perennials for sun and shade for purchase, tomatoes, hostas, Minnesota seed trial-winning seedlings and more. The day’s sales proceeds go to support community programs that engage youth in horticulture projects and University of Minnesota scholarships. The sale will be held at The Barn, 2020 White Bear Ave. in Maplewood. 


Bruentrup Heritage Farm Spring Clean-Up 

Grab your gloves and help us with spring cleanup at the Bruentrup Heritage Farm. You can help by raking leaves and small rocks in the farmyard or cleaning windows, walls and floors indoors. You are sure to see the fruits of your labors - and benefit your community, too. This is a great opportunity for teens and groups who love community service projects. A light lunch will be provided. Transfiguration Catholic Church Garage Sale

The sixth annual Transfiguration Catholic Church Garage Sale will be held Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, starting at 8:30 a.m. The sale will be located in the gathering space of the church. Items include electronics, toys, household goods, books, jewelry, religious items, seasonal items, kitchen items, a large array of children clothing and much more. This widely popular sale has something for everyone and at very low prices. Transfiguration Catholic Church is located at 6133 15th St. N. in Oakdale.


Oakdale support group for families

 National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota sponsors free support groups for families and friends of individuals living with a mental illness in Oakdale on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, starting at 6 p.m., at Canvas Health in the community room. Led by trained facilitators who also have a family member with mental illness, the support groups help families develop better coping skills and find strength through sharing their experiences. Oakdale Library events for May

“May the Fourth” Star Wars Party: This event is Saturday, May 4, from noon to 3 p.m. May the fourth be with you. Celebrate Star Wars Day at Oakdale Library and participate in activities fit for a galaxy far, far away. Make Star Wars crafts, run through a Jedi training course, take an intergalactic photo and play “Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay” on the library’s Oculus Virtual Reality sets. Don’t miss the Star Wars Movie Marathon of Episodes IV, V, and VI from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Popcorn is provided. Feel free to bring blankets, pillows, and costumes. Older kids, teens and adults can also sign up for the Star Wars Escape Room from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 4 or 1:15 to 3:30 p.m. on May 5. Five Things You Can Do to Create Caring Communities: This event is Sunday, May 5, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Learn about mental illnesses, the impact of negative attitudes and five things everyone can do to make Minnesota a better place for people who experience a mental illness in this program at Oakdale Library. This one-hour class is for any community organization interested in learning about mental illnesses and helping to change attitudes toward mental illnesses. No registration is required.

Game On! A Game Night for Adults: This event is Thursday, May 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come play tabletop games with fellow game enthusiasts at Oakdale Library. The library has a collection of games like Splendor, Carcassonne, and Sagrada, or you can bring your own to share. No registration is required.

STEM Saturdays: Detective Science

Join Mad Science in the crime lab at the Oakdale Library on Saturday, May 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. Discover how science is used to solve crimes. Watch as the classroom is transformed into a crime lab for this exciting exploration of the fundamentals of forensics. Take home your very own personal profile kit. High school study nights

Studying with friends is always more fun. Come to Oakdale Library’s High School Study Nights on Thursdays May 23 and 30 from 6 to 7:45 p.m., to complete your papers, study for AP tests, work on projects and more. Computers and iPad pros are available to use, which you can use to access to the library’s online homework help resources. Snack are provided on occasion; food and drinks from home are welcome. No registration is required.

North St. Paul Bluegrass Jam

The North St. Paul Bluegrass Jam, with its vintage fiddle music, is looking for new pickers. This non-electric style relies heavily on banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and harmonica, and includes other styles including ‘60s pop.
