Late-season peak the goal for Beacons fastpitch

The old adage about saving the best for last was apropos for the 2013 Concordia Academy softball team. The Beacons finished a game above .500 in the regular season but then went on a deep run in the section playoffs.

Concordia loses in semifinals

By virtue of its higher seed, the Concordia Academy girls basketball team hosted Minnehaha Academy in a Section 4AA semifinal game on March 11. Unfortunately for the Beacons, home-court advantage wasn’t enough.
Minnehaha Academy overcame a six-point halftime deficit and beat Concordia 67-66. The victory sent the Redhawks to the section final and ended the Beacons’ season.

Concordia Academy through to semifinals

By getting a bye in the first round of the section playoffs, the Concordia Academy girls basketball team had seven days between its final regular season game and first playoff contest. The extra time off didn’t affect the Beacons as they rolled to an easy victory on Saturday.

Raiders draw second seed in GBB playoffs

With only a few weeks left in the winter high school sports season, the girls basketball squad is the lone Roseville Area High School team still in action. The Raiders begin their quest for a state-tournament berth this week.
Roseville ended up as the No. 2 seed in Section 4AAAA and hosts seventh-seeded Mahtomedi on Wednesday at 7 p.m. It is a very top-heavy section as three teams have reached the 20-win plateau this season.

Beacons stumble in second round

A three-point victory during the regular season was enough to give Concordia Academy a higher seed than St. Croix Lutheran in the Section 4AA boys basketball playoffs. St. Croix Lutheran showed on Saturday that the coaches made a mistake in seeding the Beacons higher.
Fifth-seeded St. Croix went to fourth-seeded Concordia and handed the Beacons a 69-58 defeat in the section quarterfinals.

SAVHS looking to turn a corner

With only two seniors in the starting lineup, the St. Anthony Village High School boys basketball team has suffered through some growing pains this season. That fact is evident in the Huskies’ record, which prior to last Friday included only one win.
St. Anthony was able to double its win total with a come-from-behind victory over a conference rival on Friday and that win had first-year head coach Chris Hergenrader excited about the future.

MVHS boys swim nabs first victory

Meet victories have been hard to come by for the Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team so far this season. The Mustangs dropped their first three Suburban East Conference dual meets but broke into the win column last week.
Mounds View notched victory No. 1 by outscoring Cretin-Derham Hall 105-78 at the recently-renovated Chippewa Middle School pool. The Mustangs won 10 of the 12 events to pick up the victory.

Beacons looking to recapture early-season magic

The first third of the season couldn’t have gone much better for the Concordia Academy boys basketball team. The Beacons lost just one of their eight games before Christmas and headed into a holiday tournament with plenty of momentum.
Concordia added a victory in the first round of that holiday event but wins have been difficult to come by since. The Beacons enter this week on a five-game losing streak but still have time to right the ship.
