Tartan sophomore Cali Pearcy (24) scores against North High junior Marit Larson (33) during home action last season. The Titans won 3-0 Jan. 20. Little did they know, they’d be joining forces next season as the two teams consolidate into one team. (Linda Baumeister file photo)

To some folks the "State of Hockey" in School District 622 is in trouble

In what one might well call a drastic move, Tartan and North high schools' girls hockey teams will combine as one for the 2015-16 season.

The brewmaster beckons

150 years is a long time.
The "committee" has been meeting and plans are well underway for a big celebration to commemorate the 150th year of the founding of the Hamm's Brewing Company.
It was back in 1865 that founder Theodore Hamm began producing beer, utilizing water from Phalen Creek, which flowed through his brewery property at Minnehaha and Payne avenues.

Sarah Hendrickson
Sarah Hendrickson

An event the kids won't soon forget
She looks like an ordinary 20-year-old. But looks don't count when you clamp on a pair of skis at the top of a 90-meter ski jump.
Sarah Hendrickson recently graced the slopes of the storied, 130-year-old St. Paul Ski Club at its Nordic site near Carver Lake in south Maplewood.
She was in town to head up a three-day, June 26-28 training camp. Some 40 kids, ages 8 to 16 from the throughout the Central Division of the United States Ski Association, were on hand to glean the knowledge of the world champion and 2014 U.S. Olympian.

'Ruth' will live on in legend

People still ask, 'Who is Ruth?'
For quite a while, I have ended my columns with "Hey Ruth, you hang in there!"
I don't intend to stop, but now an explanation is once again in order.
The "Ruth" in question was Ruth Goethel. She was the wife of Arno Goethel, the former executive sports editor of the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press.

Future of area ice arenas in question

Back in the days when most everyone who skated or played hockey, it was on an outdoor pond or lake. Getting ice depended on “Mother Nature” to supply cold enough weather to freeze water.
Then came the flooding of outdoor rinks. Suddenly ice sheets popped up on every local playground as well as in many back yards.

North stadium light malfunctions under review

Problems with the lighting system at North Stadium came to a head this autumn.
On one occasion—the Sept. 5 girls soccer game between Mahtomedi and North High—the overhead lights failed to function adequately, and the contest was discontinued after just one half of play.
