Artist tells Payne Avenue stories through portraits

His portraits and stories about the subjects will be on display at the East Side Arts Council office, 977 Payne Ave., starting in September.

During much of this last long and cold winter, St. Paul photographer Stephan Kistler spent time on Payne Avenue taking portraits of the people who live, work, and visit one of the East Side’s main streets.

St. Paul working to create master plan for Swede Hollow Park


Marjorie Otto/Review • The City of St. Paul was recently awarded an $80,000 grant to create a master plan for Swede Hollow Park. Much of the work that has occurred at the park over the years has been guided by the local Friends of Swede Hollow group, as well as other neighbors of the park, who will have a chance to provide input on the city’s new master plan.

The City of St. Paul was recently awarded an $80,000 grant from the McNeely Foundation to fund the work of creating a master plan for Swede Hollow Park.

Affordable housing building slated for vacant Payne Avenue lot


file photo • The lot between Kendall’s Ace Hardware and the former Ward 6 restaurant building, 848 Payne Ave., is currently being developed by Schafer Richardson to become a 99-unit affordable housing apartment building, which will include street-level retail space.

The empty lot between Kendall’s Ace Hardware and the now-closed Ward 6 restaurant has been vacant for more than a decade, but that’s about to change in less than a year.

Payne Avenue leaders trying out new strategy to revitalize


Marjorie Otto/Review • A group of local business and property owners, residents and developers, is asking Payne Avenue stakeholders to join in creating a strategy to attract and retain businesses on Payne. The effort is called Payne Avenue Reboot and is based off Main Street America principles for community building.

Business owners, property owners, developers and residents are working to develop a new strategy to continue to revitalize the economy of Payne Avenue and the nearby neighborhood.

Ground broken for China garden at Lake Phalen

Visitors will be able to watch Chinese craftsmen work in next few weeks

Marchers go from East Side to City Hall condemning separation of children


Marjorie Otto/Review • A group of about 100 community members gathered at Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center in Dayton’s Bluff and marched to St. Paul City Hall June 20 to protest the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from families after being detained at the U.S. southern border.
