St. Anthony police officers arrested Raphael Simmons, 32, for injuring four people and holding them in a home in the 2600 block of 29th Avenue NE the morning of May 30.

Huskies baseball coach notches 300th win


Solomon Gustavo photo • St. Anthony Village High School baseball coach Troy Urdahl recorded his 300th career win at Palm Field May 31, when the Huskies beat St. Paul Como Park 10-0.

On a picturesque day at St. Anthony Village High School’s Palm Field, the weather finally delivered summer heat like a rusty pitcher, and the only clouds in the blue sky were fluffy, and the varsity baseball team beat St. Paul Como Park 10-0.

Local emergency agencies hold active shooter training


Solomon Gustavo photo • First responders from around the region — including the New Brighton Department of Public Safety, Roseville and St. Anthony fire departments, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and Allina paramedics, among others — participated in active shooter training at the former Korean United Methodist Church in New Brighton in late May.

The condemned building of the former Korean United Methodist Church in New Brighton has proven an apt site for Ramsey County and local emergency agencies to train for an active shooter in a big, public place.

‘Robin Watch:’ New Brighton resident finds bird’s nest, sets up camera to record eggs hatching


Solomon Gustavo • A resident talked about water softening services at the end of New Brighton City Manager Dean Lotter’s water update presentation during the New Brighton Community Open House at the New Brighton Community Center May 5. During Lotter’s presentation, he said the city found very low concentrations of lead in some of the city’s tap water.

After finding a robin’s nest in his New Brighton yard, Jesús Aguirre decided to put up a surveillance camera in order to observe the bird, the nest and, eventually, the hatching of the eggs.

The St. Anthony Police Department on May 16 released data on traffic stops from 2017, the year following the killing of Philando Castile, a black man, by a St. Anthony officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights.

Shoreview and Falcon Heights councils up the age to buy tobacco products

The Shoreview and Falcon Heights city councils both voted to raise the legal age for buying tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to 21. 

The aim of the age change is to make it harder for teens to have access to tobacco products.
