Hill-Murray girl golfers setting sights two steps higher

The Hill-Murray Pioneers girls golf forces finished in third place in the Classic Suburban Conference a year ago. While they are fielding a young bunch of shot makers, they will be relying on some veteran returnees to move into the upper echelon of play.

“We are a young bunch with strong one and two players. We will be searching for identity after that,” stated coach Ken Schaan.

Four of the top six players in the early season going are inexperienced when it comes to varsity action. But Schaan and the Pioneers have some additional hope in the person of senior Rebecca Osten.

“Osten was with us two years ago and played in the number three spot. She took a year off for other endeavors, but has come back again to join the team this season. She could be a big help for us,” stated Schaan.

Kristin Hagberg will work with the Pioneers as assistant coach to Schaan.

The Pioneers, listed by Schaan in the pre-season rankings will be looking at veteran player — two year qualifier for State Tournament competitions — senior, Megan Hegemeier to head up Hill-Murray in the number one position.

Osten is another senior. who is listed in the number six position.

Junior Amber Hinton is currently the number three player, while a bevy of sophomores round out the top six.

Jen Annoni is listed in the number two spot, and will be followed in the lineup by Andrea Norman, four, and Sandy Clasen, number five.

For the Pioneers to be successful in their quest to move up in the CSC standings, Schaan stated, “We will have to play well enough to finish ahead of Mahtomedi. They are definitely the number one team going into the season. Richfield is another squad who should be competitive, with several other teams who have a shot at the title.”

Hill-Murray is scheduled to open the season April 13, when they participate in a quadrangle CSC competitions with North, Mahtomedi and Tartan, in play at Oakmarsh Golf Course.

The Pioneers then host CSC competitions at Hillcrest Country Club, April 17.
