Pioneers hoping to fill gaps to contend for CSC boys golf crown

The Hill-Murray Pioneers boys golf forces will build their 2006 Classic Suburban Conference golf season hopes around a strong leadership from returning veterans.

Hill-Murray senior Joey McEnaney will lead the Pioneers as captain of this season’s team.

“We have some strong senior leadership,” stated Hill-Murray head coach Kris Oftedahl. “After that, we will rely on players moving up to the varsity level to fill in for us. We had a junior varsity team a year ago, that posted a very good record. We lost five of our top seven players from a year ago, due to graduation or school transfer, but hopefully we will get some good shot making out of the JV players who will move up this season.”

Behind captain McEnaney, senior Joe Petschauer, sophomore Bryan Merkle and ninth-grader Delaney Metcalf are expected to add stability to the Hill-Murray squad.

Coach Oftedahl will be assisted by Paul Otto.

When Oftedahl made an assessment of CSC powers, he listed Mahtomedi as a possibility to claim top honors. But the Zephyrs will have to contend with St. Thomas, Richfield and the Pioneers, if they are to be successful in their bid for all the marbles.

Hill-Murray is scheduled to open the season at their “home” course, the Hill-crest Country Club, April 18, when they host Sibley and Simley, in triangular competitions, beginning at 3 p.m.
