Ramsey County-Maplewood Review people - published February 15, 2017


Students from the K-12 online public school Minnesota Connections Academy collected coats, personal items and food donations for Face to Face during the school’s Winter Warm Up event. North St. Paul residents reminisce on a historic local business


Bruce Fisher, a board member for the North St. Paul Historical Society, explained that one of the buildings was parallel to the Soo Line railroad tracks and had the railcars go right into the building to make loading and unloading easier. The tracks are still there today, although they can’t be seen because they have been paved over.

Ice thickens just in time


The Lake Elmo Lions 60th annual Ice Fishing Contest took place on Lake Jane Feb. 5. Although January had unusually warm weather, freezing temperatures returned the week before the contest to thicken up the ice. See more photos on page 14.

 

Winners were Timly Moua taking first with a 3 lb. 9 oz. fish, Angie Davidson second with a 1 lb. 14 oz. catch, and Braiden Ziertman at 1 lb. 11 oz. for third.

North teacher nominated for Teacher of the Year


Stephanee Goeken

North High School’s Stephanee Goeken, 39, is among 132 nominees for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. 

Goeken is a student support specialist and has been a faculty member at North High since 2005.

Sen. Chuck Wiger authored a bill to help disabled veterans

Christeen Stone, 96, of Maplewood, brought several senators and staff members to tears when she testified February 2 in the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee.
