Tobacco 21 discussions begin slowly in Maplewood

file photo • Youth from John Glenn Middle School’s Support Our School group have talked with several elected officials about raising the tobacco sales age from 18 to 21. During Minnesotans for a Smoke-Free Generation Day on March 22, the students met with Reps. Leon Lillie and Peter Fischer, as well as Sen. Chuck Wiger, at the Capitol, and in April, they met with Maplewood Mayor Nora Slawik.

Cities changing the tobacco sales age from 18 to 21 is a growing trend in the metro area. The week of May 7, Shoreview and Falcon Heights became the first east metro cities to join the trend, which includes five other cities in Minnesota.

Roseville firefighters learn empathy with dementia simulations

Mike Munzenrider photo • Roseville firefighter Chris Rice readied himself for a dementia simulation May 9 at Cherrywood Pointe of Roseville at Lexington with help from Roseville communications specialist Carolyn Curti. Rice and 16 others from the Roseville Fire Department went through the simulation the first week of May at the senior community across the street from the city’s fire station to better understand what it’s like for people who have dementia.

The dementia simulation at Cherrywood Pointe of Roseville at Lexington is decidedly low tech, but it’s effective virtual reality, nonetheless.

Mike Munzenrider • Rosedale Center now owns the soon-to-be vacant Herberger’s, and is keeping its options open for the 150,000-square-foot of space. Mall management said it could be used for retail, medical, office space, a hotel or even housing.

Despite the large “going out of business” signs on the Rosedale Center Herberger’s that catch motorists’ eyes as they pass on Highway 36, Rosedale general manager Scott Michaelis said the state of the mall is “fantastic.”
