Maplewood man killed in Pine County crash

Maplewood resident William D. Joseph, 50, died Aug. 17 after his 2011 Toyota Prius was hit by a pickup truck on a road in rural Pine County.
Joseph was westbound on two-lane state Highway 70 when his car was struck by a Dodge Ram pickup driven by Danny Kitterman, 48, of Waite Park. According to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol, the truck apparently ran a stop sign going north on Government Road and broadsided the Prius around 2:45 p.m.

New tastes and sights at State Fair

Leave it to the Minnesota State Fair to entice guests with new foods hitting the stick and plunging into the fryers.

This year’s new lineup of foods includes bacon-wrapped grilled shrimp on-a-stick, deep-fried pickles dipped in chocolate sauce and grilled glazed doughnuts on-a-stick.

North St. Paul alarmed by string of daytime home burglaries

Residents of North St. Paul have seen a dramatic rise in daytime burglaries this summer.
Police Capt. Dustin Nikituk reports that since June 1, police have been called to the scenes of "numerous residential burglaries."

Century College awarded grant for veterans’ job training in transportation

Century College is one of six colleges in the country that has been awarded a federal grant to help train veterans and military families for jobs in the transportation industry.
Century will receive $120,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Neighbors were treated to hot dogs, popcorn, games, and a performance by the Teddy Bear Band. A neighborhood watch group made root beer floats.The Tom Kelly Field, sporting his retired number 10, at Edgerton was built in conjunction with the Twins Community Fund, the Maplewood Athletic Association, and the City of Maplewood. Covered dugouts and renovations to the infield, outfield, and pitcher’s mound now  will accomodate three different age groups.

The North St. Paul Police Department greeted visitors with manning a radar gun gauging speed, wearing special goggles that mimic some effects of being under the influence, and making fingerprinting records for children.

Volunteer teams paint NSP, Maplewood homes

If you live in a community in the Twin Cities, chances are good you’ve seen a house that has been painted by a Paint-A-Thon team. Over the last 29 years, Paint-A-Thon volunteers have painted 6,300 homes in the seven-county metro area.
Saturday, Aug. 3, was the official “paint day” for the 60 teams that participated in this year’s Paint-A-Thon, a program offered through the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches. Now in its 29th year, the program caters to low-income seniors and the physically disabled, who may not be able to paint their homes on their own.

Department of Health cites neglect in Maplewood nursing home death

The Minnesota Department of Health published a report of findings last week that says the death of a Ramsey County Care Center resident in April was the result of staff error.
The resident, who was supposed to be on a diet of puree-texture food, choked and died April 1 after being served an Easter holiday lunch. The resident did not have any teeth, and her care plan called for attendants to only serve her food the consistency of pudding. Additionally, the report says, the woman had a history of choking on solid foods.

Kath Auto Supply in North St. Paul closes

Much to the dismay of many local car-tinkerers, Kath Auto Supply, a small vehicle parts supplier in downtown North St. Paul, recently closed its doors.
A representative from Kath says the closure was “a corporate decision” by Uni-Select Auto Plus, which bought out the company some time ago.
