The end of an East Side mainstay

The charming old church at 977 E. Fifth St. has been around a long time.
Opened up in 1922, St. John's has since held Mass nearly every single day no matter what the weather -- rain, shine, snow or sleet. In all it's probably held over 32,000 days of Mass.
But its streak is about to end.

Oakdale Elementary honors volunteers

Oakdale Elementary School held its annual volunteer breakfast May 29.
Oakdale Elementary Principal Peter Mau and parent volunteer coordinator DeLisa Shearod presented Connie Dow with a certificate for volunteering over 20 hours in the classroom. Dow has been a volunteer in the classroom for over 12 years and has helped out with a variety of activities, Shearod said.

On-site clinic opens next week in North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District

North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District employees will no longer have to travel to receive routine healthcare services.
District 622 will open its on-site medical clinic through HealthPartners’ Well@Work program on June 17. The clinic is available for use by district employees, retirees over 65 and employee dependents with HealthPartners health insurance.
“We are excited about it,” superintendent Patty Phillips said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our employees to receive health care. Wellness of our staff is very important to us.”

Highway 36: 75-day closure between U.S. 61 and White Bear Avenue begins June 17

Motorists who regularly travel on state Highway 36 between U.S. Highway 61 and White Bear Avenue in Maplewood will need to begin planning alternate routes now, as the thoroughfare will be fully closed in both directions for more than two months starting at 6 a.m. Monday, June 17.
The 75-day closure is part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s $17 million Highway 36/English Street reconstruction project. The current signalized intersection is being replaced by a grade-separated diamond interchange.

Ramsey County begins accepting same-sex marriage license applications

Following legislation legalizing same-sex marriage that Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law on May 14, Ramsey County began accepting same-sex marriage license applications on Thursday, June 6.
Licenses will not be issued until Thursday, Aug. 1, at 12:01 a.m. Also beginning that day, Minnesota will recognize legal marriages of same-sex couples that took place in other states.

Ramsey County uses CodeRED for community alerts

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with CodeRED to provide county-wide community alerts and notifications.
Originally designed to enable local government officials to record, send and track personalized messages to thousands of citizens in minutes using high-speed community notifications, CodeRED’s user base has grown to include institutions of higher learning and utility companies.
