Local emergency agencies hold active shooter training


Solomon Gustavo photo • First responders from around the region — including the New Brighton Department of Public Safety, Roseville and St. Anthony fire departments, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and Allina paramedics, among others — participated in active shooter training at the former Korean United Methodist Church in New Brighton in late May.

The condemned building of the former Korean United Methodist Church in New Brighton has proven an apt site for Ramsey County and local emergency agencies to train for an active shooter in a big, public place.

I-35W repaving south out of Roseville is on the horizon


Courtesy of Minnesota Department of Transportation • The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin four months of repaving work July 13 on Interstate 35W between County Road C in Roseville and Fourth Street in Minneapolis. The $17 million project includes five planned weekend closures of the freeway.

Though construction season came in with a whimper for most of the north suburban area this spring, roadwork just south of the area on one of its major thoroughfares is coming up this summer.

Cookie Cart opens to embrace of the East Side

Metro State home to Minnesota’s first ‘cyber range’


Marjorie Otto/Review • Metropolitan State University held a grand opening celebration May 16 for its new MN Cyber Range, which will be based in the university’s Jason R. Carter Science Education Center. The cyber range, the first of its kind in Minnesota, is described as a “flight simulator for cyber attacks.” Cyber security professionals will use the range to practice how to react to and stop cyber attacks. Instructors demonstrated how the training simulator works during the grand opening.

Summer ‘begins’ with a busy night in North St. Paul

In an effort to reduce crowding and be proactive about the area’s growing population, North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District 622 has begun planning for remodeling work to be done at two area elementary schools.

Middle-schoolers practice civic engagement


Students from three School District 622 middle schools who participated in Project Citizen, a bipartisan program to promote civic engagement, met with State Sen. Chuck Wiger on May 15 in the Capitol Rotunda. Pictured with Wiger are Skyview Middle School eighth-graders, from left, Gretchen Draves, Molly Holthe, Ashley Medina, Margaret Pawlenty, Olivia Meyer and Sydney Tiffany. Their project was about the use of road salt, and how it impacts the environment.
